I’m very pleased to introduce you to my latest make…the boho style market tote.

Boho Style Market Tote - main shot

This bag conjures up lazy Saturday mornings for me, browsing through the farmer’s markets that sell really fresh and unique produce in my little part of the Adelaide Hills. It’s a really large tote, very convenient for such a shopping trip, or popping your beach gear in. I can never have enough of these large bags for carting a lot of stuff around!

This is the first project I’ve designed with fabric courtesy of ADORNit, from their bright and sunny Flamingo Fever line. I loved being able to incorporate little extra accents of leather and rose gold into the design to give it that extra wow factor. I’ll be sharing the full tutorial for making this bag in the next post.

Boho Style Market Tote - zipper details

I’ve used Legacy’s Flex Foam as the the as the padded dimension in this bag. I just love this product! It’s so easy to work with, and adds a sturdiness that keeps its shape over time.

I was able to find a full set of matching hardware… a gorgeous rose gold zipper and rivets. That heart shaped pull is just so cute! The colour also really pulls out the pink of the peonies on the yellow print and pops with the tan of the leather. I’ll be sharing all my sources in the next post too.

Boho Style Market Tote - more zipper details

My leather is actually genuine cows leather from a bag of scraps that my mum passed on recently.

They are left over from a leather shop that they were given when I was a baby! My mum made lots of projects with all these off cuts, and I remember fishing through that bag when I was very small…the smell is so evocative!

I am now reveling in the all the interesting colours that are now mine to use! While most of the pieces are only really tiny, they still have lots of potential! The only downside is that real leather is quite difficult to sew compared to vinyl, especially when paired with cotton fabric. But I persevered, and even though my stitching is not perfect, I love the effect. I’ll share lots of leather sewing tips for you next time…

Boho Style Market Tote - tied handles

The handles were a fun challenge, and I’m really pleased with how they turned out. They are cord covered with bias fabric, and tied with thread to make a thicker handle.

Boho Style Market Tote - pineapple fabric back

The back has a pineapple print that is so fun, and gives you a second look on the other side of the bag.

Boho Style Market Tote - side rivets

If you look closely, I’ve added more rivets on the side and near the base for more detail.

Boho Style Market Tote - lining and snap

The lining has an internal pocket, and a magnetic snap closure set on top of more leather.

Well I’m off to write up the tutorial for you all…I’ll be back later this week with all the how to’s!
