A few weeks ago I was approached by a customer to make this pillow…our conversation was totally professional, but inside I was jumping for joy. She had asked for a Little Dolly pillow!
In all honesty, this has to be one of the prettiest, sweetest and cutest (running out of superlatives!) projects that I’ve ever made. I felt like the luckiest gal ever, being asked to make this.
The original pattern is from Elea Lutz’s book Dolly, and is the Dolly’s Own Mini Quilt project, with a few tweaks from me. I have to confess that I rarely follow a pattern, as I like to change things up, or out, or whatever. I’ve made this into a pillow, and that makes it all the more versatile!
I’ve had this fabric collection since last year when it came out, and while I totally adored it, I’d not had time to really use it, except for some very small pieces for my Happy Flower Quilt.
For the white background, I’ve used a self patterned print, which is my current favourite white to use.
My version stitched the edges down with the blanket stitch on my machine, and is a really sweet way to attach them.
The patchwork top is backed with batting, and stitched in the ditch around the seams, and around each shape, to give them definition. I also raided my button jar for fun and colourful buttons to add to the centres.
The scrappy binding is also such a pretty touch, and is a great way to use up small lengths of fabric in your stash.
The back of the pillow is one of the bold contrast designs from the collection. It was a great use for it, as it’s such a different look to the front. I love that this gives the pillow ‘two faces’. And the zip is concealed beneath an envelope flap, made using the pink love heart print. This pillow finishes at 16″ square.
I was a bit sad to send this one off…it seems all the things I fall in love with are for other people! But I am glad for this chance to have made something this pretty, and know it’s bringing joy to someone else. I’m also very inspired by these economy blocks to create with another collection that I am playing with!
