An ambitious goal to help women find greater fulfilment in a digital age by helping them master and enjoy the art of sewing.
What makes a house truly feel like home?
One of my treasured childhood memories is lying in bed at night, listening to the comforting purr of my mother's sewing machine. I remember the wonderful anticipation of seeing what she was creating. But I also knew my mother was making something especially for me.
And that made me feel very loved.
She was giving me so much more than a sewn item. She was investing her time, skills, and hard work into something she could have bought, for my sake.
This is something we've largely lost sight of in our modern world. We can fill our houses with beautiful things, order almost anything we need and have it delivered to our doorstep with the tap of a button.
Modern convenience has helped us enormously, but somewhere along the way, we've begun to confuse acquiring beautiful things with the work of making a beautiful home.
Because a home is so much more than the things we put into it.
Making bread while a child learns to measure, it's the meals prepared and shared around the table, the traditions we look forward to each year, the skills we pass on, and the ordinary objects that become precious because of the people and memories attached to them.
These are small things, but they give a home its rhythms, memories, and sense of belonging. A rich family home is so much more than where they live — it's something its members actively participate in creating.
There is something deeply satisfying about choosing to invest our imagination, effort and skill into creating things for the people we love.
In a world that places such a high value on speed and convenience, choosing to spend hours making something you could easily buy might seem terribly inefficient.
We know differently.
There is value in the hours spent learning, in developing our judgement and skills. There is value in working through difficulties and discovering that we are capable of things we once thought beyond us. And there is a deep satisfaction that comes from taking raw materials and transforming them into something useful and beautiful through our own ingenuity.
Not every object in a home needs to be made by hand, but you love to make what you can, partially because you know that everything that makes the life of a home special cannot be bought ready-made.
This is the beautiful, creative work of homemaking - shaping a home through the ordinary materials and moments of family life.
This is the work Arabesque wants to be part of.
There is enormous satisfaction in starting with a folded stack of fabric, a bold idea, then learning the skills required to bring it to life, and eventually holding something in your hands that did not exist before.
Along the way, you learn patience and perseverance. You develop judgement. You make mistakes and work out how to fix them. And gradually, things that once seemed difficult become things you know how to do.
Sewing helps you build your home over time from things that carry meaning and history, and it helps you become more skilled, resourceful, confident and capable.
We exist for women who choose to invest themselves in making, learning and creating a rich life at home. We teach the skills to turn fabric, thread and an idea into useful and beautiful things that matter.
In this digital age of transience and consumption, our mission is to empower one million women to sew a handmade home—and become capable makers in the process.
