In this lesson, I’ll introduce you to two small but essential skills that make a big difference to how your sewing holds together: backstitching and turning corners.
We’ll look at what backstitching does, why it’s used at the beginning and end of seams, and how to coordinate forward and reverse stitching calmly and accurately. I’ll also walk you through how to approach corners with intention, so you can keep your seam allowance consistent as you change direction.
As you practise these techniques, you’ll begin to move from simply sewing lines of stitches to constructing seams that feel secure and well thought through. Instead of rushing or hoping things land in the right place, you’ll learn how to slow down, use the hand wheel for precision, and keep the fabric stable as you work.
By the end of this lesson, backstitching and turning corners will feel less awkward and far more manageable — giving your sewing structure, strength, and a sense of control that carries into every project you make.
